On the sources of opacity in OT: Coda processes in German

چکیده

Optimality Theory (OT) is built on output constraints. These constraints impose conflicting demands on candidates and are all violable, with precedence regulated by universal and languageparticular ranking specifications (see Prince & Smolensky 1993). As a result, constraints are minimally violated in winning candidates. An output-oriented theory of this kind needs to pay special attention to patterns of phonological opacity, arising out of generalizations that apparently need to be stated at some non-surface level of representation. Opacity constituted a central object of study in traditional generative phonology. In terms of the relevant portions of Kiparsky's (1973, 79) definition in (1) that formed the basis of most subsequent work on the topic, two different types of opacity can be distinguished.

A Stratal OT Approach to a Noun-Verb Asymmetry With Respect to Opacity in Korean

This paper revisits the well-known opacity caused by the interaction of post-obstruent tensification and coda cluster simplification in Korean and suggests a new class of data that threatens the validity of previous approaches. The new data shows that the opacity occurs only if the input belongs to a certain morphological category such as verb. Therefore, it calls for a theory in which morpholo...

German fricatives: coda devoicing or positional faithfulness?

In this paper we show how Jessen & Ringen’s (2002) analysis of voicing in German stops can be extended to account for the voicing of German fricatives. It is argued that while stops in German contrast for the feature [spread glottis], fricatives contrast for [voice] (and [spread glottis]). Our analysis, which involves presonorant faithfulness, is compared to an analysis with coda devoicing. We ...

Syllable structure in Old, Middle and Modern Persian: A contrastive analysis

Evolution of languages has always been of interest to linguists.  In this paper we study  the natural progress of the syllable structure from Old  Persian  (O.P)  to Middle Persian (Mi.P) and up to the Modern Persian (Mo.P). For this purpose all the words containing consonant sequences are collected from specific sources of each  of these  languages,  and then  analysed  according to the syllab...

Russian Loanword Adaptation in Persian; Optimal Approach

In this paper we analyzed some of the phonological rules of Russian loanword adaptation in Persian, on the view of Optimal Theory (OT) (Prince and Smolensky, 1993, 2003). It is the first study of phonological process on Russian loanwords adaptation in Persian. By gathering about 50 current Russian loanwords, we selected some of them to analyze. We found out that vowel insertion, vowel prothesis...

What Kind of Thing is a Language Faculty? A Critical Evaluation of OT Phonology

" A psychology (rationalist, empiricist, or whatever) needs to do more than just enunciate the laws it claims that mental processes obey. It also needs to explain what kind of a thing a mind could be such that those laws are true of it; which is once again to say that it needs to specify a mechanism. " (Jerry Fodor, 2000:17, italics in original) For the purposes of this article, OT will refer t...
